Liberal vs Conservative Philosophy

BobI read this in the “comments” section of a news article and found it to be very insightful.

Father/Daughter Talk: A young woman was about to finish her first year of college.

Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father.

He responded by asking how she was doing in school. Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, ‘How is your friend Audrey doing?’ She replied, ‘Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She’s always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.’

Her wise father asked his daughter, ‘Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.’

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired back, ‘That’s a crazy idea, and how would that be fair! I’ve worked really hard for my grades! I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!’

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, ‘Welcome to conservatism’.

THIS explains politics in simple terms that even a liberal can understand.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, personal responsibility, self-determination, and freedom for ALL American citizens are the principles on which the American Citizen Party was founded.

These are conservative principles and I stand by them proudly.

Won’t you join me in bringing about REAL CHANGE in 2010 and beyond by supporting this movement?

I hope so.

Damn Bob! You are as dumb as you look! Get a make over (physical and mental).

Honest Abe,

Physically, I come packaged as God intended. And, I have found in my 60 years on this earth that it is generally a bad idea to judge someone’s intellect by their appearance. It makes the one doing it look small and petty, and not very bright themselves.

And, it is for that reason that I have a established a firm policy of disregarding comments about my appearance. I put that policy into effect in your case now and will not comment further.

Regarding your assessment of my mental state, I am pretty sure that many of the thousands of people who have actually met me during my lifetime, spent time with me, and come to know and accept me as I am, will agree that I work and play well with others, can be quite funny, have a brain in good working order, am quite stable mentally and an overall good guy who is on a mission to do my part to restore our country to its greatness.

The fact that some people may disagree with my political philosophy, or the policies I propose, is to be expected, but will not stop me from speaking or writing about my vision for the future of our Nation.

But, thank you for stopping by and offering your insightful comments.

You must play us for idiots,Bob. How convenient that the father/ daughter senario you posted resulted in mean GPA of 3.0. when averaging the GPA from the hard working student and less motivated student. What a complete BS story and you posted it to validate the difference between Liberal Vs. Conservative philosophies. Typical conservative DB. Boil down a complex issue to an elementary level so that mindless conservative sheep can be hoodwinked. Laughable!

This was merely an illustration of the liberal philosophy of redistributing wealth (in this case, grades) from those who work hard to those who don’t. The result, as you correctly state, is a mean GPA of 3.0, good for the slacker, but not for the 4.0 student.

Free-thinking Americans by the hundreds of millions get it.

It’s the sheep that don’t and never will.

Thank you for revealing which one you are.

kay, this is my version,

…”The father sanctimoniously smiled and oh-so-ironically said, ’Welcome to the Republican Party.’”
The daughter replied, “Oh awesome, now I’m a Republican. I guess this means I have to sign my uterus over to the state and support the never-ending war in Iraq- which is costing billions of dollars per day (in both government spending and even worse, the high cost of human lives) and plunging us into a deep recession. Nice.
And since when does democracy equal socialism? What the hell is wrong with government programs? Don’t you use the library? Do you drive on roads or go to parks? Those are government programs. Or is it just programs for poor people that you hate so much?
And you now who’s a lot like Audrey? G.W. Bush. He spent the majority of his college years doing nose candy and maintaining a C average. Still though, someone was nice enough to extend a little corporate welfare over to him so he could eff up the state of Texas and later become the most corrupt president since Nixon.
Seriously, dad, and don’t patronize me- what’s up with that? I’m a grown woman. That Father-Knows-Best crap went out in the fifties when folks woke up to the fact that father might not always know best.
Father takes all of this in and says to his daughter, “What is it you’ve been studying over there at Smith?”
Daughter: “Poli Sci. And I’m lesbian and I’m going start a writer’s group for underprivileged inner-city youth when I graduate.”
Father: “That’s it. I’m pulling you out of that horrible place. You can finish at Oral Roberts University, marry a good Christian man and lead of life of quiet desperation just like your mother.

Ray Wallin,

I was going to spend some time responding to, what appeared to be, your well-thought-out and insightful comments…. until I clicked on the link you provided.

I immediately discovered that you had merely stolen it from a post on the MySpace page of a Massachusetts woman named “13elmarie”.

Apparently, it wasn’t your version at all.

So, never mind.

Yeah Bob, god forbid you use the work of someone else to represent your beliefs right? I fail to see insight in either version, generalizations do not get us anywhere. I do appreciate the latter version however because it is no where near as pretentious as the original.

I am 60-years-old and worked all my life. I raised 4 children. Two graduated from college, one opened his own business, and the fourth was hit by a car at age 9, had a leg amputation, and brain injury. He doesn’t qualify for any assistance, because he never worked to qualify for disability. I have always supported him. I graduated from college in top 4%. I became disabled 6-years ago and now live on $726/month and support my son. I receintly received an income tax refund which I budgeted to help pay my bills. Every penny was accounted for in the budget. Then, my brother, whom had been injured in an accident and unable to work, came to me and asked for money to buy his blood pressure medication, because he was out of work for the first time in life and had no insurance. If I were a conservative, I would have said, “I worked hard for what I got, and I’m not responsible for you. Go find a whole, crawl in it and die.” But, being a liberal, I said “Sure, don’t worry about it. Take the money and get your medication.” True, I cut into the money to pay my own bills, but God willing, my brother would do the same for me if, and when, he can.

Dear Wanda,

Thank you for your comments.

As a compassionate conservative, I offer you my deepest sympathies regarding your plight and the plight of your family members.

Life does have a way of challenging us in our daily lives, as I, and millions of Americans, have experienced.

I’ve been working since I was 15 years old and, at the rate the Federal Government is destroying our economy, I will never be able to retire. But, that just means I’ll have to enjoy life to the fullest until the end.

I read with interest your comments describing the difference between a conservative and a liberal, as stated below:

“If I were a conservative, I would have said, “I worked hard for what I got, and I’m not responsible for you. Go find a whole, crawl in it and die.” But, being a liberal, I said “Sure, don’t worry about it. Take the money and get your medication.” True, I cut into the money to pay my own bills, but God willing, my brother would do the same for me if, and when, he can.”

Personally, during my 62 years, I have helped many family members, friends and even strangers in need by offering them money, food, clothing, transportation and shelter. So, obviously, I disagree with your generalized view of the heartlessness of conservatives.

After all, study after study has proven that, by a significant margin, liberals tip less in restaurants and give less to charity than conservatives. So, I simply don’t buy the propaganda that liberals are more compassionate than conservatives.

At the core of conservatism is not a lack of compassion, but, the belief that the Federal Government has no Constitutional authority to take money from those of who work to give it to those who can’t (or won’t). That function is best left to families first, charitable organizations and churches second, local government third, and the individual States last.

Those principles apply equally to ALL Americans…. liberal, conservative or somewhere in between.

It’s too bad liberal policies don’t.

I wish you well in all of your future endeavors.

And, remember…. for true change, be sure to vote for an American Citizen Party candidate in 2012!

Warmest regards,

Bob McNeil

If there was a said “tax hike” on the rich. Based on the logic of your story where the daughters 4.0 GPA is reduced to a 3.0. A 25% redistribution of GPA. Do you really think the government is going to try and take 25% of your wealth and re-distribute it to the poor?

The government doesn’t “try” to take a portion of our wealth and redistribute it.

The government does so.
